Federal commitment to scrap wind farm zone a huge win for the South West
The Member for the South West and Shadow Minister for Energy Dr Steve Thomas has welcomed the commitment by the Federal Opposition to scrap the 4,000 square kilometre wind farm zone in Geographe Bay if they are elected.
“This is a fantastic outcome for the South West community” Dr Thomas said.
“It means that the Albanese Government is now isolated in its support for the zone that would see thousands of wind turbines being put out into our iconic Geographe Bay and take away the local community’s chance to stop them.
“Federal and State Liberals have been united in opposing the proposal, and State Labor through local MP Don Punch is reported as saying in correspondence that “Given the cost and complexity of offshore wind, we do not see it as a viable option for the foreseeable future and it is not a focus of the WA Government.”
“Chris Bowen and the Albanese Government are alone in pushing for this despite massive local opposition.”
